This just in: It's hot out. Seriously, though, it's not all that often Western Washington/Greater Seattle sees temperatures in the high 90's, much less the low 100's. We've got
a page together on PNWLocalNews.com where we're aggregating headlines in Publish 2 with
seascorcher (same thing on Twitter). We're also aggregating and curating Tweets (under the same tag) using the new…

I put out a call on Twitter today, asking if anyone was using a Publish 2 tag or Twitter hashtag to track the King County Executive race. I haven't gotten any responses back yet, which I'm taking as a collective "no" (unless anyone here cares to pipe up).
Assuming that remains the case, I'm going to start tagging stories with the following tags:
Twitter: #KingCoExec
Publish2: kingcoexec (I feel like my one mistake from the I-90 bridge tag was that I should have made it one word and thus less c…

For those who haven't seen it, Scott Karp of Publish 2 published a
list of best practices for his product ... I think we're already using most of these.

We launched our
aggregate page today for the July I-90 bridge closures.
If you've got your own page up, please share it (I'd love to link to it). If you're curious about how to help aggregate links and information,
see here.

With Westbound I-90 repairs and closures
creeping up, I thought it would be a good idea to start organizing for aggregate coverage now (for those of you interested). I'll definitely be aggregating coverage somewhere and I'd like to push out a couple tags now so we're all ready on July 5:
Twitter: #I90bridge
Publish 2: I-90 bridge
Note/Update: If you're tagging stories in Publish 2,…

Spinning out of last week's chat is
an index of the standard and customized tags we'll be using on Publish 2 for the #wanews project (or are we now just calling that News Collaboration?).
As the doc says, if you've got a suggestion for a new tag, get the word out on Twitter, Facebook, wherever and also here. Someone will make sure it gets added to the list.

It's about time we put the "which tags do we use?"
discussion to bed. We'll decide all that during a chat at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 28 (next Thursday). Since Ning won't allow me to embed a Cover It Live widget, I've posted a Ning-approved chat application to
my page, which you should al…

Our first attempt at using Publish2 helped us bring home an award today. Our snow storm coverage from Dec. 2008 took 1st place in the SNA Community Web Site contest for all circ classes. Needless to say, we're thrilled. Thanks to Angela Dice for suggesting that we give this Publish2 thing a try and making it happen.…

I've been getting a decent amount of chatter (on Twitter) about the Hood Canal Bridge closure and figured it couldn't hurt to get a Twitter hashtag and a couple Publish2 tags going. On @KitsapSun's recommendation, we'll be using
#hcbridge for Twitter,
hcbridge for Publish2 and
hcbridgearchive for older stories about the closure on Publish2.
I got the idea for the latter from…

It was nice to see so many people interested in local link collaboration.
A few really good ideas came out of that call that hopefully we can talk more about.
One being the need to establish guidelines for what we in the Northwest News Group on Publish2 link to. (By the way, if you want to join in, just join Publish2, leave a comment with your name, and either I or Seth Long can add you.) I'll set up a forum on this site where we maybe hash those out.
Also, Michelle Nicolosi suggested some ki…

Registration/RSVP is closed off for the conference call and all that's left to do is wait. Thanks to everyone who's signed up to participate in the call. For those who can't make it or didn't get their information in on time, we hope to be able to provide a recording of the call, if we are, we'll let you know.
For those joining us tomorrow—yes,
tomorrow, at 11 a.m. (PDT)—you should have received phone number and PIN details via the e-mail address you provided to us. If you haven't, e-mai…

The #wanews conference call needs a new date in May. Josh Korr is available starting May 5. I'd like to keep the call at 11 a.m., due to the fact that Josh is on east coast time and anything in our afternoon is probably too late in the day for him.
I'll start the bidding at: May 5, 11 a.m. If not too many people have a conflict with that, I'll just ask Josh for that time and date.

Our districts are starting their discussions on budget cuts, as I assume most in Washington are or will be as soon as the Legislature finishes up its budget. We had a recent talk with Randy Dorn who suggested teacher layoffs may range between 1,500 - 3,000 in the state. Schools must give teacher layoff notices by May 15.
I think this would be a great time to contextualize these budget cut and school layoff stories by giving our readers a statewide view of the cuts.
I've started to put some sch…

Sorry, folks — I messed up on the date for the call. Seth had suggested 5/1 in a discussion thread and for whatever reason I came away with April 1. WNPA would like a little more time to promote the call, so I e-mailed Josh Korr to ask if he'd be available a month later than expected.
I'll re-post the event as soon as he gets back to me.

I hope this to be a place where journalists of all types can come to talk about the kinds of stories, online projects or whatever, that would benefit from the ideas and resources of multiple journalists.
As those in traditional media organizations (like me) watch our resources dwindle, it seems that sharing our resources and knowledge would be a good way to support some of the great project journalism that we fear may suffer the consequences of the newspaper industry's downturn.
I also see thi…
